The good folk of The Durnfords have challenged the good folk of The Woodfords to a football match to be held in Middle Woodford at 11am on Friday 1st January 2010.
Weather should be nice but cold. Grass is looking a little long in places so if anybody has a sit down mower that can take down some of the longest stuff - be my guest! We've got the village hall booked for toilets, changing and heating up the soup and bacon butties - bring some cash! See below for latest timetable. We still need more players so try and persuade your friends and neighbours.
The teams so far are:
Woodfords: 1. Paul Dovey, 2. Peter Ryan, 3. Gregor Ryan, 4. Andrew Webley, 5. Paul Lancaster. 6. St.John Coley. 7. Rob Scott, 8. Rob Newman? Sting?
Durnfords: 1. Jeremy Makin, 2. Jon Baggot, 3. Mark Adams, 4. John Stringer, 5. Chris Stott. 6. Peter Curtis, 7. Hugo Hawking, 8. Jon Ward 9. Nick Gallup. 10. Leslie Burgess 11. Guy Hockley 12. Athol Hendry. 13. Another Hendry. 14 Oliver Wells. Luke Skinner? Jon Brooks?
Given the age and general fitness of most of the above we are looking to have two squads of twenty and have unlimited substitutions.
I have managed to secure an all blue kit for The Durnfords. I'm still looking for a kit for The Woodfords so they will either play in "skins" or something - not blue.
Younger players (we will probably play two lots of five minutes for 5-8 and 5 minutes for 9-11):
Woodfords (not blue): Euan Mauchline (10), Seona Mauchline (9) Ms Scott (12)
Durnfords (blue): Jonas Stringer (5), Hugh Stott (10), Cameron Stott (11), Inigo Hawking (11)
The suggested timetable will be:
- 11:00 Sing 'Abide with me'
- 11:05 first half kicks off for children and mums
- 11.15 men replace them (any score will continue)
- 11:45 Second half for childrens and mums (Half time beers for the men/women)
- 12:00 men on for last half hour
- 12:30 Final whistle. All players and spectators take to pitch for game of Ye Olde Futbal - no rules, no ref, five pig bladders are tossed into the middle and the first mob to get three pigs bladders through their "goal" will be declared the winner (goals are logs with a player on each end and are free to move up and down the goal line).
As mentioned above we've booked the village hall for changing, toilets and heating up soup/bacon butties. If anybody can help in that department - please let me know!
The Black Horse has kindly offered to give any players their first pint free after the game. May I suggest it might be a little cheeky to come drink your free pint and then leave.
Would all players and spectators keep an eye on this web page for any developments. This might include a call to arms for whitelining, grass cutting, moving goal posts!! Please download a poster and display it in your local church, pub, notice board, window, car, ...
